- No, you must have a POP3 server on the host to use PC-Eudora - or many other
- POP clients for that matter.

- Subject: HELP! Winsock/modem/GW2k P5 PCI
- From: mgaro@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (Michael Garoutte) Date: Sat, 29 Jan 1994
- 18:42:57 GMT Keywords: Windows sockets, winsock, SLIP, gateway 2000, PCI,
- HELP Summary: Can you help me get winsock to work?
-
- OK, here I go again. First of all, I apologize for the cross-post, but I
- have asked before with no replies, and I thought the right person might ...
- Well, you get the idea. Anyway...
-
- My system: Gateway 2000 P5-60/PCI system received December 1993 (not the
- latest motherboard, I understand. This one has had some
- problems with the serial ports, etc.)
- ZOOM 14.4k v.32bis internal modem (on COM1, internal COM1
- disabled from CMOS setup.)
- Other cards: PCI ATI video, Mitsumi FX001 CD-ROM
-
- My situation:
- I have only minor problems using P. Tattam's SLIPPER or CSLIPPER to
- connect to my terminal server. I can use WINPKT or PKTMUX with no problem
- under Windows (3.1, not 3.11). DOS applications for packet driver work fine
- in a DOS box under Windows (I'm posting this from one). But I absolutely
- cannot get Winsock to work. I have tried dialing under DOS, Windows, and
- even using the dialing feature and the internal SLIP driver of Tattam's
- Winsock/TCPman combo. No luck. Here's what happens: TCPman sends a
- request (such as "gethostbyname kuhub" or something) but it never seems to
- get a reply. If I look at the terminal window in my communications program,
- I can sometimes see that the replies are coming. That is, I can sometimes
- see some garbage, along with some readable messages that are obiously
- intended for TCPman, but which never arrive. Well, that's my explanation
- anyway.
-
- Is there anyone out there with a similar setup that has gottem Winsock to
- work? If so, could you please let me know what your setup/
- configuration files, etc. are? (E-mail preferred because I can't set the
- followup group with this newsreader; but posts are OK)
-
- Could this be related to the problems with Intel's PCI motherboard?
- I just don't understand why all my other communications are fine, but
- Winsock won't work.
-
- If you can help me, I will owe you one!
-
- Thanks for reading this far.
- Michael.

- Subject: Serial Port Emulator?
-
- I have seen that TCP COnnect II for windows has 2 programs that sound
- interesting:
- 1) A program that allows your serial port in windows to become your telnet
- session. Therefore you can use your favorite terminal program to communicate
- over Telnet (Like Procomm Plus for windows).
-
- 2) A program that allows one to telnet in and connect to your serial port.
- SOmething like you could run a program that watches for a call on a comm port
- and when someone Telnet's to your address, they get that port?
-
- Has anyone seen any other Winsock COmpatible programs simular to these?

- You need to find the nearest 'DNS Server', and fill in the numeric address of
- that server in the Winsock setup. After that, Winsock will use that server to
- look-up addresses. Ask your service provider.

- Try setting the TimeZone under Miscellaneous in the eudora.ini file. I just
- found that without it, sending mail from eudora that will be read by NetManage
- Chameleon will cause Chameleon to crash, with the painful inability to read all
- the saved mail (except by moving all the files and a lot of work).
